What is Promethazine with Codeine?

Promethazine with Codeine is a combination medicine used to treat cold or allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and cough.

This codeine cough syrup contains an opioid (narcotic) cough medicine, and may be habit-forming.

This Codeine cough syrup may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Before taking this promethazine medicine

You should not use this Codeine cough syrup if you are allergic to codeine or promethazine, or if you have:

• asthma or severe breathing problems;
• a stomach or bowel obstruction(including paralytic ileus);
• narrow-angle glaucoma; or
• if you are unable to urinate.

Do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, raagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.

This Codeine cough syrup is not approved for use by anyone younger than 12 years old.

Usual Adult Dose for Promethazine With Codeine Oral solution

Tris Promethazine cough syrup 6.25 mg/ Codeine 10 mg per 5 mL:
Average effective dose: 5 mL orally every 4 to 6 hours as needed
Maximum dose: 30 mL (promethazine 37.5 mg; codeine: 60 mg) in 24 hours

Uses: Temporary relief of coughs and upper respiratory symptoms associated with allergy or the common cold.
